Each Wesley-Barrell sofa or armchair is hand-built to order in our own workshop in Oxfordshire and so is exclusive and unique.
As bespoke furniture makers we do not hold stock of preassembled frames, each sofa is built from start to finish for each individual customer. Choice of leg style and colour make a huge difference in terms of matching the perfect product to your personality and interior. Alterations to seat depth and changes to seat cushions as well as tailored options such as buttoning and piping can also me made if required - Please contact Made to Last to request these.
Frame - A well designed frame is the most important element of a good quality sofa or armchair. It not only dictates the shape and form but determines durability. Our skilled carpenters take pride in making our frames from sustainable seasoned soft and hard woods (FCS sourced) that combined give strength and flexibility. Wesley-Barrell frames exceed domestic needs as they meet contract BS4875 standards for hotel use and are supplied with a lifetime guarantee (considered to be 25 years).
Springing - Traditional coil springs are fitted to the seat base to give the comfortable feel of a fully coil sprung sofa. Coil springs ensure excellent support by distributing weight evenly thereby reducing wear and tear. They come with a 10 year guarantee. • Serpentine springs are used only in the back or the arms of the furniture where the stress is less.
Padding - Wesley-Barrell use a mix of padding materials, natural layers of hair, wool felt and cotton layered to give long lasting resilience. Natural padding materials allows air to circulate for warmth in winter and keep you cooler in the summer. • Foam is also used to give firmer seat cushions and provide additional padding where larger arms or a back profile are a feature.
Upholstery – It’s a painstaking process fixing and tying the springs, building up the layers of padding and upholstering the covering fabrics. However the attention to detail, tried and tested methods and hand finishing give Wesley-Barrell’s timeless, classic British sofa and armchair designs the highly tailored look for which we are renowned.
Manufacturing in a sustainable and socially responsible way is fundamental to the Wesley-Barrell ethos. We don't just claim to be 'green' or 'eco-friendly', here are some of the practical things we do every day.
FSC accredited timber
Wesley-Barrell's timber frames are cut in our saw workshops and hand-crafted by experienced carpenters from a combination of soft and hard woods including beech and pine from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) managed forests. Frames are guaranteed for 15 years so longevity is built into our sofas from the start.
British contract standards
Our furniture meets British contract standard BS4875. This exceeds normal domestic requirements so a Wesley-Barrell sofa will endure a high level of wear and tear yet offer great comfort and good looks for years... not just for the first few months of life in your home.
To guarantee provenance Wesley-Barrell source all their own padding materials and where possible natural padding materials and fillings are used. Padding materials include hogs hair that is coated with fire retardent latex (a natural rubber) and cotton felt (a by-product of the cotton industry).
Recycled jumpers and cardigans are ripped up and washed, pieces are then attached to a backing by a needling machine to form a woven wool felt sheet used for padding.
Hessian made from Jute is used to cover seat and back springs.
Wesley-Barrell offer a range of cushion fillings including duck feathers or a polymer fibre made from recycled plastic bottles.
British natural wool
We constantly strive to widen our fabric selection and promote natural wool to cover furniture allowing you to choose an inherently flame retardant fabric with low ecological impact.
Re-use & renovate
The specialist production of our furniture within our own workshops means that Wesley-Barrell can offer a renovation and re-upholstery service. Your existing sofa can be given a new lease of life by renvovation, avoiding a disposal trip to a landfill site thereby ensuring your initial investment really can last a lifetime.
Wood off-cuts are recycled for kindling and fabric ends are up-cycled to a local charity and schools.
Wesley-Barrell recycle all their cardboard, plastic packaging and office equipment such as mobile phones and printer cartridges reducing our land-fill since 2006 by 50%.
Working with the Carbon Trust Wesley-Barrell have implemented energy saving solutions such as a new energy efficient lighting system in the workshops which provides equivalent light using half the energy.
