Have you ever spent a night on a budget sofabed? Put off for life?
Sofabeds when made well should be something you can enjoy for years. A Made to Last sofabed is guaranteed to last you up to 15 years or more.
With a low quality sofabed, the mattress begins to sag after a few years. The mechanism that opens the sofa bed also weakens and begins to wear out, making it more difficult to open and less supportive. What once seemed like a bargain can end up feeling like a pretty hefty investment for furniture that only lasts a couple of years.
This post is to explain about the 3 types of sofa bed mechanism that we use and what their characteristics are.
If you know much about us at Made to Last then you will know that our primary focus is to bring you the products that are the best value for money – this means the cheapest in the long run.
A sofabed should be a comfortable seat for you or for guests, for sitting, working, or lounging. It’s also a guest bed. If you live in a smaller residence, then it’s even more important. It has to hold up to nightly use. This is why we designed all of our sofabeds to be able to stand up to everyday use.
In any case, your sofa bed needs to stand the test of time. If you want to find a quality sofa bed, the key considerations are the opening mechanism, the craftsmanship of the mattress, the frame construction, the cushion materials and their construction as well as the fabric used to upholster it and of course the workmanship involved in designing and manufacturing your product.
All of our sofa beds come with sturdy mechanisms that won’t weaken, sag or break. On top of that, our mattresses are thicker and more carefully constructed than many other brands. which provides you with a comfortable night’s sleep.
Our factory started life as a mattress maker over 40 years ago and then moved into upholstery about 20 years ago. This is why we are confident that we have a market leading mattress on all of our sofabeds.
Anyway – I digress, this post is focused on the sofa bed mechanism.
Three Types of Sofa Bed Opening Mechanisms
A sofa bed has one of three basic opening mechanisms. Those are the standard pull out mechanism, the easy open, and the click clack. We offer all three styles on our web site. Each has unique benefits, and the Made to Last brand models have the extra benefit of the thickest mattress on the market.
The Pull Out Sofa Bed
The pull out sofa bed is the model you have seen for years. It’s the most common model and is considered the industry standard. And it’s the standard for good reason. It’s easy to set up and put away. Aptly named, the pull out sofa bed does just what the name implies. You pull the mattress frame forward to open the bed.
How Does the Pull Out Mechanism Work?
Opening the bed is simple. First, remove the top cushions from the sofa. Then, you’ll see the spring-loaded metal frame. The mattress is folded underneath in three parts.
To open the bed, pull the frame out from the centre. A pair of legs comes down and will fold into place. Unfold the rest of the mattress, the second set of legs folds out, and you’re done.
Made to Last Pull Out Sofa Beds
Most pull out beds have a thin mattress – this is due to a more compact and cheaper mechanism being used as well as of course a much lower comfort mattress.
We designed our sofabed frames to be a few centimetres larger so that they can hold a larger mechanism with a thicker mattress.
We all know what it feels like to sleep on a pull out and feel the bar across our backs. Not the Made to Last sofa beds! All of our pull out models come with a thick and supportive 14cm, fully-sprung mattress. You’ll always have the option to upgrade that for a pocket-sprung mattress as well.
Our Bluford 3-Seater sofabed is a good example of a sofabed with this pull out mechanism.
It comes with a two-fold mechanism attached to a tubular metal frame, meaning both are strong enough to hold up to frequent use. It won’t wear out or start sagging on you.
The Easy Open Sofa Bed
Sofa beds with an easy open mattress frame are efficient and as the name suggests especially easy to use. The key benefit to the easy open sofabed mechanism is that you don’t even have to remove the cushions. The cushions are attached to the sofa and stay there when you open or close the bed. No fussing with displaced couch cushions!
How Does the easy Open Mechanism Work?
You open this kind of sofa bed from the back. It’s a fold-over type of movement. So, you can convert from sofa to bed in less than ten seconds. To open the bed, just pull forward at the top of the back cushion. The bed practically unfolds by itself. Just one simple motion and you’re done.
Made to Last Easy Open Sofa Beds
This “one-move” configuration is pretty unique. It’s sophisticated, too, because you get ease of use, comfort, and durability all in one thanks to this opening mechanism.
Like all of Made to Last sofa beds, our easy open models come with our 15-year guarantee. The Coatsworth Three-Seater sofabed is our best example. It has a brilliantly simple, one-move opening mechanism.
Manufactured in Europe from a world-renowned sofa bed mechanism manufacturer, the frame is durable but also designed for your comfort.
Our easy open beds are intended to be everyday sleepers, and the Coatsworth is no different. We ensure that you receive the same quality of a traditional mattress. How, do we do this? The frame has wood support slats like a traditional bed. And, like all our mattresses, you receive the fully-sprung thick mattress with the optional pocket-sprung upgrade.
The Click Clack Sofa Bed
The click clack sofa bed is extremely affordable for one simple reason. It’s not exactly a sofa with an added pull out bed. It’s actually a bed that doubles as a sofa.
There is no formal mattress because the top and bottom of the sofa spread out to become the bed. Without the added component of a sprung mattress, the sofa bed remains a stylish, inexpensive option for your home.
How Does the Click Clack Mechanism Work?
The quirky name for this opening mechanism comes from the clicking and clacking sounds that the locking function makes when you convert the sofa into a bed. To convert, just fold the mattress forwards until you hear the click. Then, fold it back until it lays flat.
With this design, you can quickly and safely convert the bed back to a seat. Just release the locks and fold. The mechanism clicks back into place, letting you know that it’s locked. From that point, the seat won’t slip from its position.
Because a click clack is not your typical sofa bed, it’s relatively lightweight and easy to move. With its modern, minimalist design, there are no cushions to add bulk. Thus, click clack sofa beds are perfect for more compact spaces. They are wonderful space savers.
Made to Last Click Clack Sofas
Click clack sofa beds are designed for economy and space savings. Most click clack and futon mattresses are not designed for luxurious comfort. Rather, they are practical and made to get the job done.
But not Made to Last click clack beds! Our cushions are extra thick and comfortable. We took care to make sure you felt that comfort when sleeping as well as lounging. One of our most popular models is the Chinton 3-Seater sofabed, which is solidly constructed and worth the price.
The Chinton comes with your choice of 38 fabrics. Each is tested for a minimum rub count of 30,000 for added softness.
The Made to Last Difference
At Made to Last, we take pride in the quality of our mattresses. We design each one as an everyday sleeper. Even if you only use the bed occasionally, you should still get a good night’s rest.
We offer the highest quality mattresses in the UK, and we ensure the integrity of that promise by handcrafting all our pieces at our Wiltshire Factory. We make each sofabed with the finest raw materials to create sturdy frames and deep, fully-sprung mattresses.
For our pull out sofabeds and easy open sofabeds, you can choose from fully-sprung style and pocket-sprung mattresses. These sprung mattresses (as opposed to foam) ensure that you feel only the mattress and not the uncomfortable metal rods underneath you. Each mattress is 14cm-thick. That is well beyond the norm for most sofa beds. But, we won’t have it any other way.
How to Filter Your Product Search
Here is something that will help browse for your next sofa bed. On the Sofa Beds category page, you can filter your product selection by various criteria (left hand side on desktop and at the top on mobile devices). Select from drop-down menus to shop by size, opening mechanism, price, and so on.
For the sofabed opening mechanism the choices are Click-clack, Easy Action (Easy Open) and Standard Fold Out (Pull Out). For every Made to Last sofabed you view, you can further choose to order that bed in your choice of colours and mattress type, either fully strung or pocket strung style.
Is It Time for a New Sofa Bed?
Purchasing a sofa bed is a major investment. All your choices, such as style and mattress type, “hinge” on the opening mechanism (yes, pun fully intended here).
Now that you understand the benefits of the pull out, easy open, or click clack styles, you can have a little fun choosing the model, colours and coordinating cushions for your new sofa bed. If you have any questions about purchasing a sofa bed, please contact us.
We recommend that you order some free fabric samples as an initial step as on screen the colours can look a bit different to when you have the fabric right in front of you. You can order these on all sofa bed product pages on the Made to Last website.
