This week we have been speaking with Amy Whybrow who formed Hawthorn and Co in 2013. Hawthorn & co is an ethical British maker of fashionable bags & accessories that are inspired by nature.
What do you make and why?
We make a range of ethical but fashionable bags and accessories.
There are not many brands that consider the environment when designing and making their products, particularly in the fashion accessories sector. We are inspired by the beauty in nature so we like to do our best to protect it too.
We know your products are great, you know your products are great but how can they know?
We like to use really luxurious but natural materials. Our leather bags are made from an eco leather that has been tanned only using plant extracts rather than harmful chemicals.
It has a beautifully soft hand feel and wears really well with a little care, improving with age (much like myself ;-)!)
Whereabouts does your manufacturing take place?
Our leather range is made in Somerset and our canvas range is made in house in Devon.
We not only aim for UK manufacture but also sourcing local raw materials where possible, supporting the local area and heritage.
What is the toughest part of the product development process for you?
Finding UK manufacturers, over the years so many factories have closed and lost the skill set.
What is the most enjoyable part of the process of product development for you?
I love the design side. I have worked as a designer for various brands for many years before starting Hawthorn.
It is great to have the chance to have free reign and develop your own design and brand vision.
Do you have any new products/ranges planned for the next year or so?
We are currently working on adding a range of clothing in natural fabrics, so watch this space.
What products or people have helped to inspire you to create the products that you do?
Not exactly products or people but we do look a lot to nature for inspiration.
Being based in Devon we are surrounded by such beautiful colour palettes, nature is a great designer!
Tell us something about yourself that not many people know
I have a Patterdale terrier called Tilly. She is my co-pilot. She even has her own chair at my desk!
Which product in your range do you personally use the most and why?
I personally use the tan Merrivale tote bag.
I have been using it everyday for 2 years. It goes everywhere with me, even on walks. It is such a practical bag and you can fit so much stuff in it, without it hurting your shoulders. It is like a tardis.
