M Dex Design was started in 2012 by Miles Dexter who designs and makes contemporary furniture and products.
Some of his pieces are unique one-offs, others are produced in small batches. Interested in materials, processes, techniques, and the world around us, natural or man-made, his work could be described as urban yet organic.
This is a short interview to find out more about our new supplier and what makes him tick. click on any of the images for more information or to buy.
What do you make and why?
I design and make furniture, lighting, mirrors and related interior accessories. After studying Furniture & Product Design at uni it was just a natural progression to start out on my own and begin to develop my own portfolio of contemporary design pieces.
We know your products are great, you know your products are great but how can they know?
I use three words as a kind of strap line/ethos, those words are, Individual, Creative, Quality, and of course they are Made to Last.
Whereabouts does your manufacturing take place?
All manufacturing/assembly takes place here in Sheffield, most of it in my own studio/workshop. I sometimes outsource for a specific component but when that happens it is still UK made.
What is the toughest part of the product development process for you?
Generating ideas is no problem at all, sometimes there are too many ideas ! The struggle comes when sourcing materials or components which you have to outsource, this can make all the difference if a new product makes it to market.
What is the most enjoyable part of the process of product development for you?
Experimentation with materials or processes, so much fun, I could do that all day every day.
Do you have any new products/ranges planned for the next year or so?
Yes there is always new work in the pipeline, I’m working on some new table lamps at the moment, it’s early days but they could be promising.
What products or people have helped to inspire you to create the products that you do?
Materials, techniques, and processes are the things which inspire me most, these drive the design process
Tell us something about yourself that not many people know
I love clouds, they are amazing, look up you may just like them too.
What do you wish we had asked you?
Are you interested in the study of the universe, quantum physics etc ?
Yes, I love all that stuff, I have no idea what they are talking about most of the time, but it fascinates me :-))
Which product in your range do you personally use the most and why?
I’ll be honest, I don’t own a piece of my work, I would find myself sitting at home observing and being critical of it all the time ! Although I must admit, I may just treat myself to a large Loopie Mirror soon, they are impressive.
Why did you name your products as you have?
I keep my product names either, simple, quirky, or witty, I think people can relate to them easier like this. I don’t spend huge amounts of time on the name of a product, there is no deep and meaningful message in any of the names, they are simple and honest – like the Steady and Constant side table set shown below:
